from mats.
History
Saint Bernards are
named after the hospice located on a mountain pass between Switzerland and
Italy. The monks of the hospice began developing the Saint Bernard in 1707
to rescue travelers, with a full breeding program underway by the early
1800s.
Positives
The Saint Bernard is
truly a gentle giant. Their mountain rescue work is a testament to their
love of people, and they are an excellent family dog.
Negatives
Saint Bernards have a
very short lifespan, which can be traumatic on families, especially where
children are involved. Additionally, because of their size, they are
relatively expensive to keep.
