| History The Curly Coated Retriever can be traced back positively to 1803. It is thought that Newfoundlands were used in the development of the Curly Coated Retriever, which contributes to their love of water and swimming. The Newfoundland in the ancestry is not the Newfoundland we know today but a dog know as the St Johns Newfoundland. There is believed to be a fair dash of Water Spaniel in there too, though no one truly knows the breeding of the original Curly Coated Retriever. |

| Positives Curly Coated Retrievers are very intelligent dogs, and can be trained for a variety of tasks - not just retrieving. They are very energetic and love to play.
